Internet Safety

The Internet contains the world's greatest collection of information, available for anyone to use, or to contribute to at anytime.  However, with all the things that are great about the Internet, there are also dangers involved.  Here are some tips.

  1. Anti-Virus Software.  You must have anti-virus software on your computer if you plan to use the Internet.  There are many different ones out there including Symantec (formerly Norton) Anti-Virus, McAfee, etc.  Also keep your virus definitions updated.  You can pick this up at any computer store.

  2. Use Mozilla Firefox as your primary browser instead of Internet Explorer.  Internet Explorer is far more prone to downloading programs onto your computer without your knowledge.  Download Firefox here.

  3. Run your Microsoft Windows Updates frequently.  Microsoft often releases fixes to Windows that corrects flaws that can allow things to happen to your computer that you do not want.  If you are not sure how to get Windows updates, you must use Internet Explorer, and then go here.

  4. Download, install, and keep up-to-date an anti-spyware program.  A good free one is Ad-Aware, you can get that here.

  5. You get what you pay for.  Free games, screensavers, and many other free programs install spyware along with the program you install.  This spyware often forces your Internet browser to certain websites, where the person who created the "free" software gets compensated by that website.  This can range anywhere from something that is slightly annoying, to something that essentially makes your computer unable to do anything thereby requiring a complete re-install of all of your software.
